Starting on March 29th, 2014, the Iranian American Society of New York's Ferdowsi School in Long Island began offering a series of art classes which introduce students to Iranian art and culture through lessons and fun art projects. The classes are designed and taught by Ms. Roshanak Keyghobadi, who holds a doctoral degree in Art and Art education from Columbia University, NY.
On March 29th, students were introduced to Miniature Painting. They learned about characteristics of miniature painting, Shahnameh and Ferdowsi and also painted a small Gol-o-Morgh piece. On April 5th, the students were introduced to Iranian Calligraphy and became familiar with calligraphy tools, reed pen, ink, and paper. Mr. Majid Khosrowshahi was the guest artist of the day and he demonstrated calligraphy materials and familiarized the children with the art of calligraphy.
On April 12th, students learned about Iranian Tiles and Tile making and created one-of-a kind tiles. The next sessions will be about Iranian Carpets with a demonstration on carpet weaving by special guest Ms. Hengameh Shirazi and completion of a basic weaving art project. Mr. Hedayat Shafeei will be the guest artist for the session on Iranian Traditional Music and will demonstrate and play various Iranian traditional music instruments such as Tar, Setar, Tonbak and Ney for the students, and each child will have a chance to try the instruments. The final session is dedicated to Iran's geography and nature, and children will make unique collages.
